08:00 am: Kickstart your day with a Tuk-Tuk pick-up from your Ella hotel to initiate an unforgettable Pekoe Trail trekking adventure, spanning a distance of 10.12 kilometers from Makulella to Ella. This trail is an integral part of the Serendipity Trails Collection, encompassing 300 kilometers and 22 stages in Sri Lanka's Central Highlands. It gracefully traverses an extensive network of tea trails, seamlessly connecting nature, its people, culture, and heritage while encapsulating the essence of the island's diversity.
08:30 am: Embark on your trekking odyssey commencing from Makulella, specifically at the serene Allimale Bodhiya Buddhist Temple, which overlooks the picturesque Ambagaswatte valley. This valley is renowned for the river that meanders through it, ultimately forming the magnificent Ravana Falls, a popular attraction along the Ella to Wellawaya road. The waterfall derives its name from the legendary King Ravana, a character depicted in the Ramayana. According to legend, King Ravana concealed Princess Sita within a cave located behind this breathtaking waterfall.
The stage commences at an elevation of 1,240 meters and concludes at just over 1,000 meters. Initially, you'll delight in a charming stroll through a forested area. At the 800-meter mark, you'll encounter a trail fork, with one path veering to the right, leading to the Ambagaswatte valley, and a straight path through the eucalyptus forest. Maintain your course through the eucalyptus forest. At the 1.45-kilometer point, the track splits once more; continue on the right path as it winds through the trees. At this juncture, you'll make a left turn and proceed in the direction of the eucalyptus forest. From here, it's a relatively straightforward 2 kilometers to reach the summit of Ella Rock.
Ella Rock awaits you at the 4.5-kilometer mark of today's journey, offering a quieter, more serene, and peaceful atmosphere. Needless to say, the view from Ella Rock is nothing short of spectacular. It unveils expansive vistas of the valley below, the enchanting little Adam's Peak on the opposite side of the valley, as well as the numerous mountains and valleys beyond.
12:30 pm: Your remarkable trekking expedition culminates upon your arrival at Ella Railway Station. Ella railway station holds the distinction of being the 75th station on the Main Line, situated 271.03 kilometers (168.41 miles) away from Colombo. This station features a single platform, and all trains operating on the Main Line make a stop here. Ella Railway Station first opened its doors to travelers in July 1918.
