08:00 am: Begin your day with a Tuk-Tuk pick-up from your hotel in Ella to commence an unforgettable Pekoe Trail trekking expedition from St. Catherine Seat to Makulella (Distance 9.38 km). This trail is part of the Serendipity Trails Collection, spanning 300 kilometers and 22 stages in the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka. It meanders through a vast network of tea trails, showcasing the essence of the island's diversity by seamlessly connecting nature, its people, culture, and heritage.
08:45 am: Embark on your trekking journey accompanied by an experienced guide. St. Catherine, located within the upper division of Nayabedda Tea Estate at an elevation of 1,875 meters, serves as the second-highest starting point among all the Pekoe Trail stages. Despite its relatively short length of just over 9.3 kilometers, this stage is brimming with the trail's enchantment. It encompasses villages, places of worship, tea plantations, farms, historic bungalows, forested areas, and offers continuous awe-inspiring vistas of the mountains and valleys as you descend towards Liyangahawela and eventually reach Makulella. The stage concludes at an altitude of 1,262 meters, making it a noteworthy climb if attempted in reverse.
At the 1.5-kilometer mark, you bid farewell to the last hamlet on your right-hand side. After a brief passage through a forested area, the trail unfolds to reveal one of the most breathtaking spots along the entire Pekoe Trail. The prominent mountain directly ahead is known as Namunukula, which translates to "Nine Peaks" in Sinhala. Its primary summit stands at an impressive 2,036 meters. Historical records suggest that during the 15th century Ming treasure voyages, the Chinese fleet under Admiral Zheng utilized this geographical landmark for navigation to Sri Lanka, as it is the first visible point of reference after departing from Sumatra.
Lastly, as you approach the village in a few minutes, you'll encounter Balagala, distinct from Liyangahawela, the village just below. Balagala boasts a striking and vast Hindu Kovil that you'll notice on your left as you pass through the village. Your trekking expedition concludes upon reaching Makulella.
12:45 pm: As the day draws to a close, return to your hotel in Ella, taking time to reflect on the remarkable experiences and breathtaking scenery encountered during your journey.
