Country: Tanzania
Duration:
2 days
Description
Embark on a 2-day hike to Ol Doinyo, part of the Great Rift Valley volcanic system that produces carbonatite lava. The mountain occasionally experiences volcanic eruptions.
Day 1: Arusha - Lake Natron Our driver will pick you up from your hotel in the morning and take you to Lake Natron. The drive is long and you will arrive at Lake Natron camp some time after lunch. At the same time, the scenery along the way is picturesque, and you have the opportunity to see local people, including Maasai tribesmen, as well as some African wildlife. After checking in, your guide will take you to visit Ngare Sero Waterfall. The road passes through canyons and sometimes across creeks. Therefore, we recommend that you wear sandals or similar clothing so that you do not have to take off your shoes as often. Drive to the lakeshore where you have the opportunity to capture the stunning views on camera before returning to the cabin for dinner and rest. Day 2: Hike to Ol Doinyo Lengai Volcano - Arusha At 1:00 AM, your driver will take you to the base of Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano, where you will begin your climb. Stabilizing on the volcano slopes can be dangerous, especially in the dark, so follow your guide and do not overtake him. The hike is strenuous and takes between 7 and 12 hours, depending on your fitness and pace. The slope is steep, so it’s best to take a break every 100 meters to adapt to the environment. It's best to have breakfast on the way to the summit to prepare for the next climb to Ol Doinyo Lengai. At the crater rim you have reached an altitude of 2,960 m. Here you can actually hear the flow of lava from Ol Doinyo Lengai inside the "Mountain of God" crater. Going downhill is easier and you may want to go faster. However, this is when the most injuries occur, so be careful! It's also a good idea to swap your fleece for a sun hat after sunrise to avoid heatstroke. When you return to the base of the mountain, our driver will be waiting for you with a cold drink and drive you back to the camp where you can have a quick shower and lunch before returning to Arusha.
