Celebrate one of Zanzibar’s most vibrant cultural traditions by joining the Mwaka Kogwa Festival in Makunduchi, a southern village in Unguja Island. Rooted in Persian origins and deeply woven into Swahili culture, this annual festival marks the Shirazi New Year and is a unique mix of ritual, theatre, and celebration.

During the four-day event, the festival features dramatic mock fights between men using banana stalks — symbolizing the clearing of past conflicts and welcoming the new year with peace and unity. Women dress in brightly colored kanga and sing traditional songs, offering blessings for fertility, prosperity, and harmony.

You’ll also witness:
Rituals performed by village elders
Traditional Swahili dances
