Embark on a breathtaking trekking experience through the Usambara Mountains, known for their lush greenery, friendly villages, and dramatic viewpoints. This guided 4-day adventure takes you deep into the eastern highlands of Tanzania, combining nature, culture, and local hospitality.
Day 1: Lushoto – Magamba Rainforest – Lukozi
Begin your journey in the charming town of Lushoto, the heart of the West Usambara Mountains. After breakfast, set off on foot toward Magamba Rainforest, a rich biodiversity hotspot home to colobus monkeys, chameleons, and many endemic bird species.
As you walk uphill, pass through small farms and villages, gaining insight into the daily lives of the Shambaa people. Inside the rainforest, your guide will introduce you to indigenous plants used for traditional medicine and point out remnants of German colonial bunkers and WWI history.
After a short rest in Magamba, descend and connect to the road, where you'll take public transport through scenic countryside to Lukozi, a quiet village surrounded by hills and farmland.
Day 2: Lukozi – Rangwi
After a hearty breakfast, begin your trek through fertile valleys and hillside villages. Along the way, interact with local farmers and learn about traditional agricultural practices—banana cultivation, sugarcane, cassava, and spices are all grown here.
Ascend steadily into cooler elevations as the landscape becomes greener. In the early afternoon, arrive at Rangwi, a village known for its peaceful convent run by local nuns.
Your accommodation tonight is the Rangwi Sisters’ Convent, offering simple, clean rooms and a warm, spiritual atmosphere. Dinner is prepared by the nuns, often featuring fresh produce from their garden.
Day 3: Rangwi – Mtae
Depart Rangwi after breakfast for one of the most scenic legs of the journey. The trail to Mtae winds through a highland plateau with stunning panoramic views. Enjoy uninterrupted vistas of the Pare Mountains, Mkomazi National Park, and, on a clear day, even Mount Kilimanjaro.
Mtae is perched dramatically on a cliff edge and is often considered the jewel of the Usambara range. Upon arrival, relax at your guesthouse or explore the village and its viewpoints.
Day 4: Mtae – Lushoto (Return by Private Transfer)
Wake up early for a sunrise walk (optional) or enjoy a relaxed breakfast with views over the mountains. Before your return, you can choose to explore Mtae further—visit a local market, meet village elders, or take a short hike to a hidden waterfall or sacred viewpoint.
When ready, a private vehicle will take you back to Lushoto (approximately 2–2.5 hours by road), where your journey concludes.
