Description
Discover the Berber villages of Takrouna and Zriba El Alia on a private day trip from Tunis. Enjoy a scenic drive through the Tunisian Dorsal and explore the villages' stone houses and narrow alleys.
Begin your private full-day tour with a scenic drive across farmland and olive groves, climbing gradually into the hills of the Tunisian Dorsal.
First, stop at Takrouna, a Berber village on a rocky summit of about 200 meters, with stone houses, vaulted rooms, narrow alleys, small craft stalls, and 360-degree views over the valleys and the coast. Learn about the Battle of Takrouna (19-21 April 1943), when New Zealand troops, including the Maori Battalion, captured the summit during the Tunisian campaign of World War II.
Next, continue toward the mountains of Zaghouan to Zriba El Alia, an abandoned Berber village built between two rocky peaks, about 3 km south of Hammam Zriba. The village dates back to the 16th-17th century and was left by most of its residents in the 1960s, who moved to the new village on the plain.
See vaulted stone houses, paved lanes, a 17th-century zawiya, and roofless ruins, with views of Jebel Zaghouan. Enjoy time for photos and quiet exploration, away from the crowds.
