Discover the Sahara Desert on a 2-day tour from Tunis. Visit El Jem, Matmata, and Douz, spend the night in a desert camp, and explore the cultural heritage of Kairouan.
Day 1: El Jem, Matmata, and the Sahara

Begin with pickup from your selected location and travel south in a comfortable air-conditioned vehicle. Visit El Jem and discover its impressive Roman amphitheater, one of the best-preserved Roman monuments in North Africa and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Continue toward Matmata, famous for its unique underground troglodyte homes and Berber heritage. Discover the traditional architecture and, depending on the itinerary, visit the famous Hotel Sidi Driss, known as a filming location for Star Wars.

Continue through the dramatic landscapes of southern Tunisia with a stop in Tamazret, a picturesque Berber mountain village offering beautiful panoramic views and excellent photo opportunities.

Continue to Douz, known as the “Gateway to the Sahara.” Experience the spectacular golden dunes and the atmosphere of the Tunisian desert. Depending on the selected option, enjoy optional activities such as camel riding, quad biking, buggy rides, sandboarding, or 4x4 excursions.

At sunset, admire the changing colors of the Sahara before arriving at the desert camp. Enjoy a traditional Tunisian dinner, experience local desert traditions, and spend a memorable evening around the campfire under the desert sky. A traditional bread-making demonstration may also be available.

Day 2: Chott El Jerid, Desert Landscapes, and Kairouan

After breakfast at the camp, continue through the spectacular landscapes of southern Tunisia. Cross Chott El Jerid, Tunisia’s famous salt lake, known for its vast salt flats, unusual colors, and mirage effects. Enjoy scenic stops and photography opportunities when conditions allow.

Depending on the selected option, join an optional 4x4 excursion to explore remote desert landscapes such as Chott El Gharsa, Ong Jmel, and the mountain oasis of Chebika, including famous cinematic landscapes and dramatic natural scenery. If the 4x4 option is not selected, an alternative visit or free time may be offered according to the itinerary.

Continue toward Kairouan, one of Tunisia’s most historically important cities and a major center of Islamic and cultural heritage. Discover the city and its traditional craftsmanship, with opportunities to experience local specialties and Tunisian culture. After the visit, begin the return journey to the selected drop-off location.
