Kaymaklı Underground City & Red Valley Sightseeing Tour Standard Option

Discover one of the underground cities of Cappadocia and tour Pigeon Valley. Explore the beautiful Red Valley to see the fairy chimneys and strange rock formations. Drive to the abandoned village of Çavuşin and visit the Church of John the Baptist.
There are many underground cities in the Cappadocia region of Turkey and on this full-day tour you will explore one of the most significant as you drive through the beautiful Red Valley amongst its fairy chimney rock formations.

You will also go to the old village of Çavuşin, largely deserted due to the rock falls that plague the area. For this reason it is best to take a guide. At Çavuşin you will visit the Church of John the Baptist.

First you will visit the Red Valley, which is at its most beautiful when the evening sun hits the slopes of the valley and creates one the most magical sunsets in the world.

Move on to Rose Valley, an isolated valley behind Urgup. See beautiful rock formations with hidden rock-carved churches. One of the most interesting aspects of the area is the countless tracks connecting small villages and towns, through vineyards and gardens that spread like a spider’s web.

Drive to Çavuşin to visit the Church of John the Baptist, which dates from the 5th-Century AD with paintings from the 6th, 7th and 8th-Centuries.

Following a lunch break we will continue to Pigeons Valley to explore the underground city of Kaymakli. The city was discovered under the hill in the middle of the town and opened to public in 1964. Although only 4 levels of the underground city can be visited, it is not known exactly how many levels it originally had.

You will visit Ortahisar, which takes its name ("Middle Castle") from its central location among the Cappadocian towns of Goreme, Urgup and Uchisarand Nevsehir. A few kilometers from the Goreme Open Air Museum, enter the town and notice the doors in the rock surfaces on both sides. They are the best example of the cool-air storage systems in Cappadocia.

At the end of the tour you will be dropped back at your hotel in the Avanos, Goreme or Urgup areas having seen one of the most unique sights in Cappadocia, one of the most unique places in the world.
