Description
Explore Charleston's most exclusive neighborhood on a walking tour, discovering the stunning architecture and rich history behind iconic sites like Rainbow Row and the grand mansions of The Battery.
Journey 'South of Broad' on a guided walk through Charleston's most exclusive and photogenic neighborhood. This is no ordinary stroll; it's a deep dive into the city's stunning architecture, where every brick and iron gate has a story to tell.
We'll move beyond the typical tourist path to truly understand the city's unique architectural language. You'll learn to identify the iconic 'Charleston Single House' and discover why its famous porches—called 'piazzas'—were a brilliant solution to the Lowcountry heat. You'll also learn to spot the 'earthquake bolts' that saved the city and hear the stories of the catastrophic 1886 quake.
Our walk will take us along the high-hedged, gaslit streets to the grand mansions lining The Battery, where you can almost hear the cannons fire on Fort Sumter. We'll explore charming cobblestone streets laid centuries ago and, of course, visit the vibrant, colorful homes of Rainbow Row.
But this tour is about more than just beautiful facades. We'll uncover the rich, and often dramatic, history built into the very walls of these magnificent homes. You'll hear:
Presidential Secrets: Stand where George Washington was hosted on his famous 1791 Southern tour.
Engineering Marvels: Learn about the "floating staircase" inside one home that continues to baffle architects today.
A Front-Row Seat to War: See the very piazza where a Confederate general watched the first shots of the Civil War.
The Birth of Preservation: Discover the story of the pioneering woman who saved this entire neighborhood from demolition.
Join us to experience the history, beauty, and secrets of South of Broad. By the end, you won't just see a neighborhood; you'll understand it.
