Discover the traditional island of St. Aegidien. Our city tour takes you on a journey through time from the early Middle Ages to the Age of Enlightenment – exciting, touching, and full of surprises. You'll meet Gertrud the Younger, the last Brunonin, who was not only a noblewoman but also a monastery founder. You'll learn how the Benedictine monks lived, prayed, and worked in the cloisters – following clear rules, with fixed rituals, and a very unique view of the world.
But St. Aegidien is more than just the Middle Ages: We'll tell you about Louis Spohr, the world-famous composer who took his first musical steps here. And about Ephraim Lessing, the great writer and enlightener, who pondered tolerance, reason, and humanity in the immediate vicinity. This tour, with a lot of heart, well-founded knowledge, and a pinch of humor, combines great history with little anecdotes – and shows how closely spirituality, power, art, and everyday life were intertwined in Braunschweig over centuries.
