Special tour: From the roof to the basement – Nevin Aladağ's sound installation in the water reservoir
The special tour "From the Roof to the Cellar" offers an extraordinary opportunity to experience a sound installation by Nevin Aladağ and to experience it sensually in interaction with the historic water reservoir from 1880.

As part of the construction of a central water supply system for Darmstadt, the elevated tank of the municipal waterworks was built on the top of the Mathildenhöhe between 1877 and 1880 according to plans by engineer Otto Lueger. Joseph Maria Olbrich had the exhibition halls built on its foundations.

The reservoir consists of two separate chambers, each with a capacity of approx. 2,250 m³, and a sluice chamber in front. The structure consists of several vaults made of clinker bricks. The vaults were built on formwork. A special feature of the construction is that the clinker bricks were mortared with lime mortar refined with egg white, which is still waterproof today. The thick standpipe, the water level gauge, and the iron spiral staircase in the entrance hall are still preserved as technical features. The reservoir was in operation until 1994.

The reservoir functions as a buffer storage tank, which fills up during periods of low demand and covers the additional demand for water at peak times.
