विवरण
Walk Uraga's streets where Hokusai once lived. Visit 4 venues, view his iconic prints, join a woodblock rally, and take "The Great Wave" home on a uchiwa fan. A scenic 2–3 hr town walk.
The world-renowned ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai lived in Uraga from 1834 to 1836, spending part of his stay at Shinfukuji Temple in the town's outskirts. At the time, Uraga was a thriving port as the maritime gateway to Edo, where ships, goods, and people from across Japan converged. Here, Hokusai was inspired by the sea, the vessels, the bustling crowds, and the distant peak of Mount Fuji.
This event invites you to walk the very streets Hokusai once strolled: viewing his ukiyo-e masterpieces, trying your hand at woodblock printing, and feeling the power of the waves he immortalized — all within historic farmhouses and temples that still carry the spirit of the old port town.
**[How It Works: The Print Rally]**
Beginning at Venue 1 (Wine Cellar Miyamasa / Old Farmhouse Wing) and ending at Venue 4 (Uraga Brick Dock Cultural Center), you'll visit all four venues in sequence. At each stop, you add one color layer to your print of "The Great Wave off Kanagawa." By the final venue, your four-color woodblock print is complete — and you'll take it home mounted on a traditional uchiwa fan.
**[Exhibitions]**
No less than 46 prints of "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji" and 10 prints of "A Thousand Pictures of the Ocean" series are on display in the galleries. These are faithful reproductions of Hokusai's works, created using authentic Edo-period woodblock printing techniques by the Takahashi Workshop — a studio recognized as a National Traditional Craft (Edo Woodblock Prints). The vivid, revived colors are breathtaking in person.
**[Interactive Activities]**
Pose within the "Big Wave Splash" installation inspired by Hokusai's iconic wave design, and explore the layered print panel, which illustrates how multiple woodblocks are applied in sequence to produce a single finished masterpiece.
**[Town Walk Route]**
The route covers approximately 4–5 km through Uraga's historic streets (2–3 hours total). A highlight is the Uraga Harbor Ferry (Uraga-no-watashi): a short crossing from East Kanoe Shrine to West Kanoe Shrine, on a traditional small boat service that has served this harbor for centuries. Along the way, discover local cafés, craft beer, and spots connected to Hokusai's life and tastes.
*We recommend completing all four venues in order to finish your woodblock print.*
*The route involves approximately 4–5 km of walking. Comfortable footwear is recommended.*
