This 2027 winter-limited day tour takes you from Nagoya to Takayama and the UNESCO World Heritage village of Shirakawa-go, finishing with its magical winter light-up. Departures are available on January 25 and February 1, 2027—a once-a-year winter scene.

Meet at 10:00 at Nagoya Station West Exit, behind BIC CAMERA (6-9 Tsubakicho, Nakamura-ku, Nagoya-shi, Aichi-ken 453-0015). Please arrive 10 minutes early; this is a shared tour and departs punctually at 10:00. Hotels within 3 km of Nagoya Station can be picked up between 9:20 and 10:30, in hotel order. Show your booking name and phone number to the driver. Departure times may change due to weather or traffic; follow the driver-guide’s instructions. Travel by a properly licensed green-plate vehicle with a professional Chinese-speaking driver. No shopping stops.

Around 12:30, enjoy about 120 minutes in Takayama’s historic old town, including free time for lunch. Walk the beautifully preserved Edo-period castle town and merchant streets known as “Little Kyoto of Hida,” browse the Meiji and Taisho-era Sanmachi area, taste local specialties such as Takayama ramen, and admire Hida crafts. If traffic is heavy, sightseeing time may be shortened or the Takayama stop may be cancelled.

At 14:30, depart from Takayama Station for Shirakawa-go. Spend about 2 hours freely exploring the thatched-roof gassho-zukuri village of Ogimachi, surrounded by mountains, rice fields and rivers. With 152 households, it is the largest of the three World Heritage gassho villages. Visit the Shiroyama Observatory for panoramic views of the village and the Haku-san mountains.

Then enjoy approximately 150 minutes at the Shirakawa-go winter light-up. Illuminated areas include around Wada House, Myozenji Temple, the west side, Kando (Kumachi) area and Shimotani. Please note: roads may be snowy or icy—wear suitable winter night-walking clothing; wheelchairs may be difficult to move; watch for snow and icicles falling from roofs; roadside drain covers remain open for snow clearing; restrooms are crowded, so use the nearest one; the village is flammable—smoke only where ashtrays are provided; there are no trash bins—take rubbish home or return it to shops; do not enter private property or houses.

Recommended winter gear: waterproof, windproof and insulated coat; non-slip shoes or insulated waterproof boots (slip-on crampons are sold at home centers); raincoat or rain poncho (umbrellas can be dangerous in strong wind); one flashlight per person for dark areas; hand warmers, gloves, hat and earmuffs.

At 20:00, regroup in Shirakawa-go and return to Nagoya. Around 21:00, a small vehicle arrives at the Takayama meeting point, where you may leave the tour; the coach does not stop in Takayama. Arrive at the Nagoya meeting point around 22:30, with hotel drop-off between 22:00 and 23:00 in order. Itinerary times may be adjusted due to weather and road conditions.
