Discover Portland's hidden histories on a guided, small-group walking tour of the Old Port, downtown, and working waterfront. Marvel at images of the past and colorful storytelling, making the past come alive. Hear stories about the city's sights, streets, and buildings that are typically omitted from other tours. The group will include no more than 15 people, so there's plenty of room to interact and ask questions.
My name is Dugan Murphy and I am a full-time public historian in my hometown. Over 31,000 people have taken tours with me! I relish my vocation: creating unforgettable experiences for curious travelers – the ones who really want to connect with the place they're visiting. I have been the official tour partner of Maine Historical Society since 2023.
Brick sidewalks beneath your feet and beautiful Victorian-era buildings nestled around you, on this tour you’ll casually stroll Portland’s lush, historic Old Port toward the sparkling waters of Casco Bay. Enjoy two hours to slow down and immerse yourself in the best Portland has to offer.
End your tour in a waterfront park, about a 5-minute walk from where you started, surrounded by boutiques, restaurants, and other activity opportunities to continue your own discovery of the city.

Portland is hilly. Plan to walk uphill sometimes, along cobblestones, up a staircase of 6 steps, and down two staircases (24 steps total). Let me know if you need to avoid the staircase and I will reroute while seeing the same landmarks.
You will walk 1.5 miles. The longest distance between tour stops is about 0.2 miles (a 4-minute walk)
This tour takes place rain or shine.
A portion of every ticket sale will help fund the restoration of the Abyssinian Meeting House, the third-oldest Black church still standing in the US.
There are no bathroom stops en route. Please use the bathroom before meeting up with the guide.
Meet me at Post Office Park, on the corner of Middle and Exchange Streets in the heart of the Old Port. This is 0.5 miles (.8 km) from the cruise ship terminal. Find me amongst the small boulders at the corner of Middle and Exchange Streets. I'll be carrying a sign that says "Portland by the Foot."
