Mekelle: 3-Day Danakil Depression and Erta Ale Tour

Day 1: Mekelle – Danakil Depression (Erta Ale)

Start your adventure with an early morning 4WD journey from Mekelle to the Danakil Depression, specifically the Erta Ale volcano. Travel through diverse landscapes of solidified lava rocks and sweeping sand dunes, passing small hamlets scattered throughout this remote region.

Upon arrival at the Erta Ale camping site, take some time to settle in before gearing up for an evening hike up the volcano. As dusk falls, follow the trail to the summit, where you'll spend hours mesmerized by the mesmerizing flow of lava and the dramatic boiling lava lake.

After a thrilling evening, descend back to the campsite for dinner and enjoy a night under the stars or in a basic shack.

Day 2: Erta Ale – Hamad Ela

Wake early to hike back to the crater's edge and witness the stunning volcanic activity illuminated by the sunrise. After soaking in the views, return to camp for a hearty breakfast.

Post-breakfast, set off for Hamad Ela, a 5-hour drive that includes a picnic lunch in the shade of palm trees along the route. Explore Hamad Ela village, immersing yourself in the lifestyle of the local Afar people. Later, make your way to Salt Lake Asale, a vast salty expanse. Enjoy a swim in the natural pool while savoring a wine or beer as you watch the sunset reflect off the salt-crusted ground.

Day 3: Hamad Ela – Dallol – Mekelle

Rise early for a trip to Dallol, renowned for its bizarre acidic colors, fumaroles, and spitting acid springs. Often regarded as one of the hottest places on Earth, Dallol's vibrant hues will make you feel like you've landed on Mars.

Explore the unique geological formations, including salt mountains and bubbling lakes, as you soak in the extraordinary landscapes created by volcanic activity. After a refreshing lunch in Hamad Ela, begin your drive back to Mekelle, taking home unforgettable memories from this otherworldly adventure.
