Most visitors see Berat on a day trip from Tirana and are back in the capital by evening. This is for travellers who are moving on: you pack once, your luggage stays in the trunk, and the road to Berat becomes a heritage day with two sites that Berat day tours usually skip.
Your English-speaking driver meets you in Tirana Airport arrivals with a name sign, or at your Tirana address. After about 1.5 hours you reach Ardenica Monastery, on a hill above the Myzeqe plain. It was founded in 1282, and in 1451 Albania's national hero Skanderbeg married Andronika Arianiti here. Take about 40 minutes for the quiet courtyard and the church frescoes by the Zografi brothers; entry is free.
Half an hour later you are at Apollonia, the Greek and Roman city where the young Octavian, the future Emperor Augustus, was studying when Julius Caesar was killed. You have about 1 hour 15 minutes to walk among the columns of the Monument of the Agonothetes, the odeon and the medieval monastery of St Mary, home of the site museum. From there it is about an hour to Berat, and your driver drops you at your hotel.
Leaving Berat? Book it the other way: we pick you up at your hotel in Berat, visit Apollonia and Ardenica on the way and finish at Tirana Airport or your Tirana address.

The price is per car for up to 4 people with luggage, not per person. Groups of 5 to 8 travel in two cars. Each person can bring one large suitcase and one carry-on; tell us in advance about extra or oversized luggage. We cannot provide child seats. The trip takes about 5 hours, including about 40 minutes at Ardenica and 1 hour 15 minutes at Apollonia. Apollonia closes at 19:00 (earlier Nov-Apr, closed winter Mondays). Landing later? Book the Afternoon/Evening option: Ardenica only, open until 21:00. Ardenica is a working monastery: please cover shoulders and knees. Cars cannot reach every guesthouse in Berat's old quarters (Mangalem, Gorica and the castle); there we drop you at the nearest point a car can reach. Need a ride back later? At checkout you can add "Return ride 1-4 -20%": a direct private ride for up to 4 people from your hotel in Berat to Tirana, Tirana Airport or Durrës, on a later day you choose.
