Draw your own manga with professional manga artist Kazuo Maekawa inside Kujo-kan, a historic hall in the Tokyo National Museum garden that is normally closed to visitors.
Spend 65 minutes drawing manga with a working professional inside Kujo-kan, a historic hall in the garden of the Tokyo National Museum that is normally closed to visitors. Your teacher is Kazuo Maekawa, a manga artist for more than 27 years since his 1997 debut in Kodansha's Young Magazine, best known for drawing the manga of Ace Attorney and Ace Attorney Investigations.

The session starts with the roots of manga. Look at a replica of the first Choju-giga scroll, painted in the late 12th to early 13th century, where rabbits, frogs and monkeys swim, wrestle and chase one another like people. Then cast a rabbit, a frog or a monkey as your hero, try out ideas on practice paper, and draw a single-panel animal manga on your first shikishi board with a brush pen.

Next, look at faces and expressions in Hokusai Manga, Katsushika Hokusai's famous books of sketches. Pair up, draw each other, and add an Edo-period hairstyle, first in practice and then on your second shikishi board. To finish, Kazuo Maekawa draws a quick portrait of each guest, about 30 seconds each, and hands it to you with your finished work.

Kujo-kan was once the reception hall of the Kujo family, court nobles of Kyoto. It began inside the grounds of the Kyoto Imperial Palace and was moved to the museum garden in 1934. Seating is on floor cushions in a tatami room; chairs are available if kneeling is difficult.

The workshop is taught in Japanese with an English interpreter beside the artist in every session. No drawing experience is needed, and all brush pens and paper are provided. Families are welcome: ages 5 and up can take part.
