Pickup at your hotel in central Tokyo. Walk among wild pink and white Yashio azaleas at Akechidaira and Lake Chuzenji in their short spring season.
We pick you up at your hotel in central Tokyo at 07:30 and drive about 2.5 hours to Nikko. This tour runs only in the short azalea season, from mid-May to early June. The wild Yashio azaleas of Nikko are pale pink (Akayashio) and white (Shirayashio). They grow on the mountain slopes and by the lake, and they are a symbol of Tochigi.
Around 10:00 we drive up the Irohazaka road and stop at the Akechidaira plateau. In some years the slopes here turn pink with Akayashio flowers. You have time to walk around the viewing area and look down over the valley.
Around 11:00 we continue to Lake Chuzenji. You walk along the south shore of the lake, where the white Shirayashio and the pink flowers bloom between the trees. The water, the young green leaves and Mt Nantai make a fresh spring picture. You have time for lunch by the lake at your own cost.
In the early afternoon we drive to the Hangetsuyama area above the lake. From the parking area you walk a short trail to a viewpoint over Lake Chuzenji and Mt Nantai. In bloom season, azaleas line the path. The walk is about 1 hour return. We leave the lake at about 15:30, drive down the Irohazaka and arrive back at your hotel at about 18:00.
Your plan is customizable: we choose the spots where the flowers are best that week. You can change the order, walk more or less, or skip a stop. You can also swap in a nearby stop, such as Kegon Falls or the Shinkyo Bridge photo point, if it fits the tour time.
This is a private tour. Only your group. The tour takes about 10 hours, including the drive.
If the Hangetsuyama road is closed or cancelled on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead walk the Senjogahara marsh trail, where other spring flowers grow.
