Explore Bordeaux through its writers and great figures in a 2h walking tour. From Montaigne to Mauriac, Hugo to Chaban-Delmas, discover the city’s history through the words and lives that shaped it.
Discover Bordeaux in a unique way: through the eyes, words, and legacies of its greatest writers and historical figures.
This 2-hour walking tour takes you from the poetic reflections of François Mauriac at the Miroir d’Eau to Montesquieu’s enlightened vision of commerce at Place de la Bourse. Stand before Pey-Berland Tower, where Montaigne once led the city as mayor, and step into the refined world of 18th-century salons with Choderlos de Laclos at Cour Mably.
At Place des Quinconces, relive the tragic fate of the Girondins, symbols of revolutionary eloquence and liberty. Stroll the quays where Victor Hugo praised Bordeaux as a port of freedom, then pause before Mauriac’s childhood home to explore his Nobel Prize legacy. Finally, reflect on modern Bordeaux with Jacques Chaban-Delmas, its mayor for nearly half a century.
Blending literature, politics, philosophy, and urban history, this tour reveals Bordeaux not just as a city of stone, but as a living dialogue between past and present.
