Enjoy a private day trip from Tbilisi to Chiatura. Explore Soviet heritage and cable cars, see Katskhi Pillar, Mgvimevi and relax with a home-cooked meal at a local house.
Begin your journey from Tbilisi, where your guide will pick meet you at your hotel for door to door service. After heading west on the central highway, arrive in Chiatura and stop at the edge of the city at the Mgvimevi Convent. Carved directly into the cliffside, this unique cave monastery is accessed by a long, narrow tunnel and hanging stairs. It serves as a peaceful, spiritual introduction to the dramatic gorge, contrasting sharply with the industrial power you are about to explore.
Descend into the industrial heart of the valley. Chiatura was famous for its vast network of passenger ropeways—the first of their kind in the USSR—built to transport miners to the steep cliffs. Experience the daily commute of a miner by riding one of the newly restored cable cars. Soar over the river and the Brutalist apartment blocks for a dizzying perspective of the city layout.
Explore the architectural icons of the Soviet era. Visit the massive, Brutalist Stadium and the eerie, abandoned Cable Car Station #5, a favorite spot for photographers capturing the "ghost city" aesthetic. Go beyond the exterior and visit the grand Soviet Palace of Culture to see the stunning interior theater hall. With its velvet seats and elaborate frescos, it offers a glimpse into the artistic life that flourished alongside the hard labor of the mines.
Drive up to the hills to be hosted by a local family. In the comfort of their private home, enjoy a true Imeretian feast. Taste the region’s distinct, thin-crust Khachapuri, fresh Pkhali (vegetable appetizers), various warm dishes and home made tkemali sauce, all served with genuine warmth and a view over the valley.
End the day at one of the world's most surreal sites: the Katskhi Pillar. This 40-meter natural limestone monolith has a small church perched precariously on top. It was the home of a monk who lived in isolation closer to God for over 20 years. Seeing this "Stairway to Heaven" in person is the perfect, contemplative finale to a day of dramatic contrasts.
