Re-live the Allied landing in Sicily in 1943 through immersive reconstructions, historical artifacts and eyewitness accounts. In Catania, learn how Operation Husky changed the course of World War II.
Enter the Historical Museum of the Sicily Landing of 1943, housed in the Le Ciminiere complex in Catania, and relive one of the decisive events of World War II: Operation Husky, which began with the landing of Allied troops on 10 July 1943.
The visit begins with a reconstruction of a Sicilian square from the 1940s, complete with period shops and buildings. Continue inside an air-raid shelter and discover, through the settings and a bombing simulation, the conditions experienced by the civilian population.
Then explore the rooms dedicated to the Sicilian campaign: photographs, documents, newspapers, maps, uniforms, weapons and original artifacts recount the clashes and the advance of the Allies on the island. See recreations of a bunker, a surgical hut and other scenes from life at the front, along with wax figures of some of the key figures of the period.
The route also includes a photographic section dedicated to Phil Stern, a witness to the war in Sicily. The visit concludes with a space commemorating the fallen, to reflect on the human cost of the conflict and the value of peace.
The experience begins and ends at the museum, in the Le Ciminiere Exhibition and Cultural Center, near Catania Centrale Train Station. Allow approximately 90–120 minutes to explore the exhibits at your own pace.
The museum is open every day, including holidays, from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm. The last admission is at 6:00 PM.
