Begin with a pickup from your hotel in Amman and set off on a 1.5-hour drive to the Azraq Wetland Reserve. Upon arrival, meet your RSCN-certified ornithologist guide and embark on a 3-hour bird walk through the reserve.
Follow the boardwalk trails through this tranquil oasis and spot the many birds that flock here across the wetlands and pools. Learn about the ecological history of the oasis, the conservation effort to restore it, and the extraordinary variety of species visible depending on the season.
Next, head to Qasr Azraq, a black basalt fortress at the heart of Azraq town. Originally a Roman fortress, later an Umayyad hunting lodge, and most famously the headquarters of T.E. Lawrence and the Arab Revolt forces during the winter of 1917–18, the fortress still contains the small room where Lawrence slept and wrote sections of Seven Pillars of Wisdom.
