A short trolleybus ride carries you to the WW2 Victory Monument and the Military Museum, where you explore the price of “victory” in the Stalinist narrative.

The Golden Age. Continue to the Circus, which recalls the Soviet promise of culture and leisure for the masses. Nearby, the Komsomol Youth statue and the housing blocks open conversations about government-allocated apartments and the myth of equality. Stop for a canteen-style lunch, tasting dishes born out of shortages and inventive Soviet cooking. Decline & Fall. The final act begins at the Lenin statue in Valea Morilor — once a personality cult, now a ghost of the past. At the publishing house, peel back the layers of censorship and forbidden voices, while two nearby churches tell the story of religion under “scientific atheism,” from destroyed crypts to deported priests. End in a hidden bar, where over a glass of Soviet vermouth you connect Gorbachev’s failed Prohibition and the country’s present-day revival as a wine nation.
