Meet your guide at the bus station, as this cemetery is about 3 km from downtown, in front of the cemetery, and begin where Jože Plečnik wanted visitors to stop, breathe, and reflect — in the Garden of All Saints, his UNESCO-listed masterpiece and the symbolic entrance to Ljubljana’s cemetery.
From here, Žale unfolds as a peaceful, park-like landscape where history, art, and memory intertwine, revealing stories far beyond what one might expect from a cemetery. Žale is, in many ways, an open-air gallery, showcasing striking art by renowned Slovenian artists and offering insight into the city and its people.
See the Jewish Cemetery, the Memorial Park that was erected after the 2nd World War, and some amazing statues by famous Slovenian sculptors. There is a little Italian Cemetery, German and Austrian memorials, among others.
Visit architect Plečnik's grave, which he designed himself completely, from the tombstone to the plants. Be surprised by the plants he chose.
