Descrição
Rising from Congo Town to Golden Square, this trail honors Black brilliance. Through slavery and exile, our ancestors fought, saved, and rose in 1937 to shatter the Empire and birth modern Barbados.
Begin your tour at the Esplanade, a peaceful stretch of green that was once Congo Town, an enslaved yard turned bustling community. Learn how ancestors built lives from nothing and how the beautification project of 1916 displaced families who had carved out a home in the shadow of the Bay Plantation.
Trace Bay Street, following the footsteps of those who turned struggle into strength. Walk the grounds of the 1631 Bay Estate, 300 acres of sugar and suffering, but also the birthplace of resistance. At Beckles Spring, hear how enslaved women scrubbed clothes not just for pennies, but for freedom, one wash, one coin, one step closer to liberation.
Honor Bayville, the soil that raised Sir Garfield Sobers, a boy who carried a nation on his shoulders and became cricket's first global legend. Pause at the Round House, built in 1833, where poet Edward Kamau Brathwaite found his voice and gave the Caribbean its literary soul.
End your tour at Golden Square, born from the ashes of the 1910 Racoon Quarters fire. It became the stage for Clement Payne's defiant words in 1937. When they deported him, the people didn't mourn. They marched. They rose. Four days of uprising that shook the Empire and paved the way for a new Barbados.
