Day 1: Addis Ababa – Semera
Fly from Addis Ababa to Semera, the gateway to the Afar region. Meet your guide and drive toward the Danakil Depression area. Enjoy desert landscapes, volcanic formations, and Afar cultural settlements along the way. Overnight in a basic campsite or lodge depending on itinerary arrangement.
Day 2: Semera – Erta Ale Base Camp
Drive deeper into the Danakil region toward Erta Ale volcano base camp. Travel across lava fields and desert terrain. Arrive at camp in the evening, prepare for nighttime trekking to the volcano, and receive a safety briefing from local guides and Afar escorts.
Day 3: Erta Ale Volcano Exploration
Early night trek to Erta Ale volcano to witness the active lava lake glowing in the crater. Spend time observing one of the world’s most unique volcanic experiences. Return to base camp for rest after sunrise and continue journey deeper into Danakil.
Day 4: Dallol & Salt Flats Exploration
Visit Dallol, one of the lowest and hottest places on Earth. Explore colorful sulfur springs, salt formations, and acid pools. Continue to the salt flats and observe traditional salt mining activities carried out by Afar workers using camel caravans.
Day 5: Danakil – Awash National Park
Depart Danakil Depression and drive to Awash National Park. Arrive in the afternoon and enjoy game viewing including antelopes, baboons, and various bird species. Visit Awash Falls and relax in the natural surroundings.
Day 6: Awash National Park Exploration
Spend a full day exploring Awash National Park. Enjoy wildlife viewing, scenic drives, and birdwatching along the Awash River. Discover volcanic landscapes and enjoy the peaceful savannah environment.
Day 7: Awash – Harar
Drive east toward the ancient walled city of Harar. Arrive in the afternoon and explore narrow alleyways, traditional houses, and vibrant markets. Learn about Harar’s rich Islamic heritage and unique cultural identity.
Day 8: Harar – Dire Dawa – Addis Ababa
Visit the famous hyena feeding site in Harar early morning if available. Later transfer to Dire Dawa Airport for your flight back to Addis Ababa. End the tour with unforgettable memories of Ethiopia’s desert, wildlife, and cultural diversity.
