Look at Guangzhou at night, and you will see two cities.

One is a bright city of skyscrapers, a global metropolis in barely a generation. But the other, just near the most luxurious corner, is hidden in the shadows: dense urban villages where millions of migrant workers live. Inside, the streets are always narrow and wet, and the buildings crowd together so tightly that even at noon, sunlight can hardly reach in.

Many of the urban village’s dwellers come from the countryside, chasing dreams and hoping to change their fate. Every morning, they head to construction sites, restaurants, and delivery routes—small but steady, like ants and cells in the city. Without them, the city would collapse; yet too often, they are ignored and pushed to the margins.
