Tokyo: Ebisu Yokocho - Eat From Every Bar in the Alley

One roofed alley in Ebisu with a dozen bars under it. You sit at one table and food arrives from all of them - five dishes and your drinks are already paid, so nothing is settled at the end.
Ebisu Yokocho is one covered alley with about a dozen tiny bars under it,
and it works in a way nothing else in Tokyo does: you sit down at one of
them, and you can order food from all the others. The owners run food
between the shops. Thirteen kitchens, one table, and no two of them serve
the same thing.
This was a public market once - the Yamashita Shopping Center, which grew
out of the black market stalls that appeared here after the war. It closed,
sat empty, and reopened in 2008 as this: a single roof over a dozen
independent bars, each about three tsubo, each run by its own owner, all
of them deliberately serving something different. Kyoto oden. Okonomiyaki.
Hakata ramen. Osaka kushikatsu. Okinawan food. Horumon. Wagyu.

The tables are shared. There is no way to sit here without your elbow
being six inches from a stranger's, and that is not a design flaw - it is
the entire point. Within twenty minutes most people are talking to their
neighbour. The problem, if you do not speak Japanese, is getting past the
first sentence.

That is what your host is for. We order across the alley for you, explain what everything is, introduce you to whoever is sitting next to you, and translate until the conversation runs on its own.

Five dishes from five different kitchens and two drinks each are already paid through your booking. Nothing is collected in the alley and no bill arrives at the end. Your host chooses the dishes on the night based on what each kitchen is doing well, and tells you what is coming before it lands on the table. If you want something beyond that, your host will order it and you settle that one item yourself - but nothing extra is required.

Guests must be 20 or over. Vegetarian and no-alcohol versions are available - tell us when you book.
