Experience a live play about Oscar Wilde at the Samuel Beckett Theatre in Dublin. Explore the Old Library at Trinity College Dublin and see the Book of Kells.
Begin your experience at the Samuel Beckett Theatre with a live professional play of "Oscar Unwritten," a 60-minute play presented by the Samuel Beckett Theatre. Watch as Wilde’s life unfolds through Robbie Ross, as memory and imagination blur, forcing him to decide whether the truth behind Wilde’s brilliance and ruin should be told.
Figures from Wilde’s world — Bosie, Constance, and Carson — appear alongside the characters that made him famous. Together they portray the triumph, scandal, brilliance, and tragedy of Wilde’s life, tracing his journey from dazzling celebrity to devastating downfall.
Through this shifting world of memory, art, and accusation, "Oscar Unwritten" pieces together a portrait of one of the nineteenth century’s most brilliant and contradictory literary figures.
After the show, head to the Old Library and Book of Kells, which is self-guided. The Old library building is located 5 minutes walk away from the Theatre, The Book of Kells is located in one of the most beautiful libraries in the world, the Long Room. The Book of Kells is an illuminated manuscript thought to have been created by monks on the island of Iona off the coast of Scotland.
The Book of Kells is over 1,200 years old and the colors still shine vibrantly on the page. Some of the detail in the Book of Kells is so intricate that it is almost invisible to the naked eye. The illustrations throughout the manuscript are filled with layers of symbolism. Visitors can see two pages on display at any one time. These pages are changed every 6 to 8 weeks.
As part of a landmark restoration project to preserve and conserve the Old Library and its vast collections, 200,000 books have been removed to be cleaned, catalogued, and digitised for future generations. Don’t worry, there are still 17,000 books in the first four bays when you enter the Long Room. You are visiting at a unique time, as the Old Library will close at the end of 2027 for approximately 3 years to facilitate building renovations, including updates to fire safety and temperature controls for books. Your visit is before this closure.
While in the Old Library, look out for a copy of the 1916 proclamation, The Brian Boru Harp, and 4 female sculptures that were added to the Old Library 2 years ago. Gaia is a touring artwork by UK artist Luke Jerram. Measuring seven meters in diameter and created from 120dpi detailed NASA imagery of the Earth’s surface, the artwork provides the opportunity to see our planet, floating in three dimensions.
