Interlaken: Lake Brienz Cruise and Rothorn Steam Train

Enjoy a scenic drive along Lake Brienz, a cruise on a vintage paddle steamer, and a ride on the Brienzer Rothorn steam railway. Admire the breathtaking mountain panorama from the summit.
Begin your day with a scenic drive along the shores of Lake Brienz, arriving in Interlaken. Spend the morning strolling through the town, exploring Interlaken’s world-famous Höhematte before the crowds arrive. Enjoy a coffee with a view of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau mountains.

Next, head to the Interlaken Ost boat pier to board the vintage Lötschberg paddle steamer, built in 1914. Enjoy a first-class ticket with access to the upper deck. The captain will be waiting to welcome you on board and show you the way.

Sail across the turquoise-blue lake, surrounded by the mountains of the Bernese Oberland. During the trip, make your way to the middle of the lower deck to see the heart of the award-winning restoration: the original engine from 1914 in action. Keep an eye out for the famous boat dock from the Netflix series Crash Landing on You in Iseltwald, as well as the Grandhotel Giessbach, built on the cliffs in 1873 and a view of the impressive Giessbach Falls.

After leaving the paddle steamer in Brienz, the base station of the steam-powered Brienzer Rothorn Bahn is just a few steps away. The train itself dates back to 1891 and along its hour-long ride you’ll pass through the pristine mountainside of streams, meadows, and forests.

The view from the summit of the Brienzer Rothorn is a spectacular panorama of the lake and the Bernese Alps, with over 700 visible mountain peaks. Spend the next 2.5 hours at the Rothorn Kulm mountain restaurant, with everything from quick snacks to gourmet menus, as well as with a short hike to the viewing platform.

At 4:28 p.m. take the sunset train ride down into the valley, where you’ll be waiting to take you back to your accommodation.
