Choshi sits at the easternmost tip of the Tokyo region, where Japan's day is said to begin, and this private full-day tour from Tokyo reaches it by a small retro railway that the town itself keeps running by selling rice crackers at every stop. Private, per-group, up to six guests.
We leave Tokyo around 07:30 for the roughly two-hour drive to Choshi. The day's first stop is a ride on the Choshi Electric Railway, a two-carriage line that famously stays in business partly on senbei cracker sales, rattling through cabbage fields to the coast. From the railway we walk to Inubosaki Lighthouse, marking Cape Inubo, one of the points in Japan associated with the first sunrise of the day; you can climb the tower for a view over the Pacific in one direction and the fishing port in the other. After the lighthouse we visit the Yamasa soy sauce works, one of the breweries that made Choshi's name, for a self-guided walk through the production hall with your driver-guide explaining the brewing process as you go. Lunch is at your own choice at the Choshi fish market, known for fresh catch straight off the boats.
The railway ride and lighthouse entry are included in your price, along with the van, driver-guide, fuel and water. The fish market lunch and any soy sauce you buy to take home are your own cost. The Yamasa factory tour depends on a reservation slot for your visit date, which we arrange in advance.
