Beskrivning
Skip the lines at Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore and explore its mosaics, golden ceiling, and sacred relics with an audio guide at your own pace.
Discover one of Rome’s most important and beautiful churches with a skip-the-line visit to Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, one of the four major papal basilicas. After bypassing the queues, enter a vast sacred space that combines early Christian origins with centuries of artistic evolution.
Inside, begin by admiring the breathtaking 5th-century mosaics in the nave, some of the oldest and best-preserved in Rome, illustrating vivid biblical scenes from the Old and New Testament. Continue to the triumphal arch and apse, where intricate golden mosaics reflect the glory of early Christian art.
Look up to the richly decorated gilded coffered ceiling, traditionally said to contain gold brought from the New World, creating a striking visual impact. As you move through the basilica, your audio guide will lead you through chapels, altars, and historical details that reveal the church’s deep spiritual and artistic significance.
Descend to the crypt area to discover the relic of the Holy Crib, believed to be wood from the manger of Jesus, an important pilgrimage site. You will also see the tombs of popes and notable figures, including the resting place of Pope Francis, adding modern historical relevance to this ancient site.
The experience concludes outside, where you can admire the imposing façade and one of Rome’s tallest bell towers, completing a journey through centuries of faith, art, and history.
