A single day here covers more of Hanoi's history than most tours manage in three: the modern nation's founding at the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum Complex, dynastic Vietnam at the Temple of Literature, and colonial-era history through a site you choose yourself in the afternoon.

Your guide starts at the Mausoleum Complex, walking you through the grounds around the Presidential Palace to the stilt house where Ho Chi Minh lived and worked, explaining his role in Vietnam's 20th-century history along the way. From there, you'll stop at the One Pillar Pagoda, built in 1049 in the shape of a lotus rising from water, before continuing to the Temple of Literature, founded in 1070 as Vietnam's first university, where you'll walk its courtyards and gates and learn how Confucian scholarship shaped the country's education system for centuries.

After a traditional Vietnamese lunch at a local restaurant, you decide how to spend your afternoon: the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology, where exhibits on the country's 54 ethnic groups include reconstructed village houses and traditional dress, or Hoa Lo Prison, where preserved cells and exhibits document Hanoi's colonial and wartime past. Either way, the day continues at Tran Quoc Pagoda, Hanoi's oldest Buddhist temple, set on the edge of West Lake beneath its red pagoda tower.

The day ends in the Old Quarter, where your guide walks you through the narrow streets and centuries-old trading streets that still shape daily life here, context you won't get wandering on your own.
