A day at the Rosario Islands that does not end at sunset. You visit four islands by speedboat, with snorkeling, a shrimp cup at Cholon and lunch on the beach, and when it gets dark you make one more stop: a quiet spot where the water glows when you move it. You are back in Cartagena by bus around 8 p.m.
How the day goes. We pick you up between 7:30 and 8 a.m. at a set point in your zone: the Clock Tower for the Old City, Centenario Park for Getsemani, San Martin Avenue in Bocagrande, Primera Avenue in El Laguito, Santander Avenue for El Cabrero and Marbella, or the Corales de Indias hotel in the North Zone. From there a van takes you to Marina Santa Cruz in Manga, where the speedboat leaves around 9 a.m. You pass the Bocachica fort at the mouth of the bay and reach Coco Loco Island, a private island where you get close to an hour to snorkel, swim and rest. Then comes a snorkeling stop over the sunken mansion once owned by Pablo Escobar, and Cholon, the lively island where boats gather and you get a shrimp cup right in the water. The afternoon is beach time at a club with chairs and shade. Lunch is a typical local meal, served at Coco Loco Island or at Playa Tranquila in Baru depending on the route that day.
The night stop. At nightfall the boat goes to a dark, calm spot for about 15 minutes. Bioluminescent plankton lights up when the water is stirred, so it sparkles around your hands and feet as you move. You can get in or watch from the boat. There is a snack before the trip back, which is by bus.
Please read this before you book. The glow is a natural phenomenon: it is strongest on dark nights around the new moon and much weaker under a full moon or a cloudy sky. It is not guaranteed, it is subtle, and it is very hard to photograph with a phone; the bright pictures you see online are heavily edited. This is also a long day, about 12 and a half hours, with several fairly short stops rather than hours on one beach. Cholon is loud and crowded, especially on weekends. Vendors on the islands sell food, chairs and photos for a fee, so agree the price first and bring cash in small bills. Shade at the stops is limited, and the speedboat is open, so the ride can be bumpy when the sea is up.
If you want the islands and one night experience you will not get on a regular island tour, with the pickup and the port tax already sorted, this is the day for you.
