Most trains go from A to B. The Bernina Express descends from 2,253 meters to the valley floor and shows you the Alps from an angle you'll never see by car.
From Milan Central Station, you'll depart comfortably by coach – no changes, no stress, no crowded regional trains. As you cross the Valtellina, your guide prepares you for what you're about to see: not a list of names, but stories, fun facts and details that turn a journey into an experience.
You arrive in St. Moritz, the heart of the Engadine and a symbol of alpine elegance. You have free time to walk along the lake, explore the town center, or sit down for lunch.
Then board the Red Train and begin the most beautiful part. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008, this track was built by hand more than a hundred years ago, meter by meter, without a rack: the train overcomes the slope solely with the grip of its wheels.
The route first takes you to the Ospizio Bernina, the highest point at 2,253 meters, where Lake Bianco reflects the glaciers. Then comes the stop at Alp Grüm, at 2,091 meters: from there, you have the Palü Glacier and the entire Valposchiavo before you. It is the most isolated station on the route, only reachable by train.
From there, it's downhill. Valleys, spiral tunnels, alpine lakes, villages where the language and architecture change. The final stop is the Brusio Helical Viaduct: a stone circle on which the train turns on itself to lose altitude. Don't forget it.
Arrival in Tirano, free time for coffee and restroom facilities, and return by bus to Milan – relaxed, with the whole day already behind you.

A jacket, even in summer: the Ospizio Bernina is at an altitude of 2,253 meters. Comfortable shoes. In Switzerland, most businesses accept euros and credit cards.
Tip
On the train from St. Moritz to Tirano, the seats on the right side have the best view. We'll also remind you of this on board.
Accessibility
Not suitable for those with walking disabilities or in a wheelchair. Pets and large luggage are not allowed.
Route
In the event of bad weather or train availability, the itinerary may be reversed. The places visited remain the same.
