Kampala: 2-Day Rwenzori Mountains Hiking Tour

Embark on a 2-day hiking adventure through the Rwenzori Mountains, exploring the scenic Mahoma Trail. Trek through dense forests, bamboo zones, glacier-fed streams and the serene Mahoma Lake.
After an early breakfast, you will be picked up from your hotel in Kampala and begin the scenic drive westwards toward Kasese, at the foot of the legendary Rwenzori Mountains, also known as the “Mountains of the Moon.” The journey takes approximately 7 hours, passing through changing landscapes of rolling hills, tea plantations, small trading centers, and views of the Rwenzori range rising dramatically on the horizon.
You will stop en route for lunch and short refreshment breaks before continuing to Kasese town. On arrival, transfer to your hotel sandstone hotel, check in, and take time to relax after the long drive. In the evening, enjoy dinner at the lodge as your guide briefs you about the next day’s hike, weather conditions, and what to expect on the trail. Overnight in Kasese at sandstone hotel, surrounded by cool mountain air and views of the Rwenzori foothills.

DAY 2: Guided Rwenzori Nature Hike (Nyakalengija – Mahoma Trail)
After an early breakfast, drive to Nyakalengija, the main gate of Rwenzori Mountains National Park. Here, you will meet your professional guides and park rangers for registration and a detailed safety briefing. The hike begins from the park gate and gently ascends into the lower slopes of the Rwenzori along the scenic Mahoma Trail.
The path leads through dense montane forest, towering bamboo, and open glades, crossing several clear, fast-flowing streams that originate from the high peaks. The cool air, sound of rushing water, and calls of forest birds create a refreshing mountain atmosphere. As you walk, your ranger will point out unique plant species, colorful butterflies, and a variety of birds, with chances of spotting primates such as blue monkeys and black-and-white colobus in the canopy.
The trail continues toward the Mahoma River and Mahoma Lake area, offering beautiful viewpoints and peaceful picnic spots. The relaxed pace allows plenty of time for photography, rest, and appreciation of the dramatic scenery and rich biodiversity that make the Rwenzori one of Africa’s most remarkable mountain ecosystems.
After the hike, return to the Nyakalengija trailhead, where you will say farewell to the rangers and begin your drive back to Kampala, carrying unforgettable memories of the “Mountains of the Moon” and an authentic taste of highland adventure.
