Discover the Scottish Highlands on a day trip from Edinburgh. Visit Loch Ness, Glencoe, and the Highlands, and enjoy a drink in Pitlochry, a Victorian village on the banks of the River Tay.
Begin your journey in Edinburgh and travel through the stunning landscapes of the Scottish Highlands. Pass by Stirling and catch a glimpse of the impressive Stirling Castle and the monument of William Wallace.
Continue through The Trossachs National Park, stopping at Kilmahog, where you might spot some Highland cattle. Arrive at Rannoch Moor, surrounded by mountainous landscapes, lochs, and valleys. Stop in Glencoe, one of Scotland's most beautiful and magical valleys, where the bloody massacre of the MacDonald clan took place. Take photos of The Three Sisters and try to spot famous scenery from films like Harry Potter and James Bond.
Make another quick stop to admire the Three Sisters, three unusual rock formations. The pointy ridges are named Gearr Aonach (short ridge), Aonach Dubh (black ridge), and Beinn Fhada (long ridge).
Continue your trip to Loch Ness, passing through Fort William. The huge Scottish mountains and Ben Nevis will take you into The Great Glen. The Great Glen Fault divides the heart of The Highlands and takes in Loch Linhe, Loch Lochy, Loch Oich, and Loch Ness. The Caledonian Canal and the Fort Augustus lock system will be your next destination. There’ll be plenty of time to visit the canal, have lunch, and go on the Loch Ness cruise if you choose to do so.
After leaving Loch Ness, make your way to the Commando Memorial, a monument dedicated to brave soldiers in World War Two. From here, if the mist allows, you can see the magnificent Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the United Kingdom.
Continue to Cairngorms National Park, passing Loch Lagann and Ardverikie Castle on your way to Pitlochry. This village is full of beautiful Victorian houses and will be your last stop before returning to Edinburgh. Enjoy a drink in one of its many pubs.
On your journey back to Edinburgh, enjoy the change in scenery between the Highlands and the Lowlands and see the 19th-century Forth railway bridge that crosses the Firth of Forth, yet another of Scotland’s contributions to the World Heritage List.
