Your Cultural Walking Tour begins at 9:00 AM at Talking Through Art (TTA) — a welcoming and inspiring place to start your Kigali experience. TTA is an NGO that employs over 100 women with disabilities who create not only traditional baskets, but unique woven masterpieces you won’t find anywhere else. Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted by Omar, your friendly local guide, who will offer you a warm cup of Rwandan tea or coffee as you settle in and learn a bit about TTA’s story and impact in the community.
Once ready, the adventure begins! Omar will lead you through the charming Gikondo neighborhood, a hidden gem of Kigali known for its welcoming community and breathtaking views. As you walk along, you’ll hear fascinating stories about Kigali’s history, Rwanda’s culture, and how the city has transformed into one of Africa’s cleanest and most vibrant capitals.
You’ll stop at a lively charcoal and wood market, a place few tourists visit, where you’ll get a glimpse of everyday Rwandan life. From there, you’ll pass through colorful fruit stalls overflowing with tropical produce, before arriving at one of the highlights — tasting a piece of fresh sugar cane, cut right in front of you.
The tour continues with a stop to enjoy the best potato samosas in town — crisp, flavorful, and freshly made. Then, you’ll refresh yourself with a glass of local fermented milk (Ikivuguto), a traditional Rwandan drink that’s both delicious and symbolic of local culture. You’ll also have the chance to try freshly squeezed sugar cane juice, watching the simple but fascinating process as it’s made before your eyes.
Along the way, Omar will make sure you don’t miss any of the panoramic viewpoints overlooking Kigali — perfect for photos that capture the city’s beauty. Don’t be shy to take pictures; this tour is truly a photographer’s delight. The relaxed pace and friendly atmosphere make it easy to enjoy every moment, connect with people, and soak up the spirit of Rwanda.
After approximately 1 to 1.5 hours of walking and exploring, you’ll return to Talking Through Art, where your tour ends with an optional visit to the TTA gallery and shop. Here, you can see the stunning woven art pieces made by the women, meet some of the artists, and learn more about their stories.
If you wish, you’re warmly invited to stay for lunch and share a meal with the TTA women — a truly authentic and heartwarming experience that gives you a deeper understanding of local life, resilience, and community spirit.
