In the 1860s, not only was the main building of ETH Zurich built, but just a stone's throw away, architect Gottfried Semper also had the Federal Observatory, one of the oldest research buildings at ETH Zurich, built. Generations of researchers have gazed into the vastness of space from here. During a visit, you'll see the historic dome, where sunspots were observed as early as the 19th century, and the solar tower, which was used to study the outer solar atmosphere between 1951 and 1980 – a project that attracted worldwide attention.
