Option 1: Osaka Castle Morning Walk

Meet your guide at 6:50 AM and set off along the inner moat. The water is still and the noise of the city hasn't started yet. Stop at Gokuraku-bashi Bridge, where the keep is reflected in the moat, and take a proper photo here — not a rushed selfie with strangers' heads in the frame.

Then, head to the plaza in front of the keep. It's the shot everyone who comes to Osaka wants, and at this hour you can stand right in the middle of it. Your guide explains what you're actually looking at: the current keep is the third to stand on this site, after the Toyotomi and Tokugawa eras, rebuilt in 1931 with donations from the citizens of Osaka. Today it is a registered national cultural property.

Finish by passing through Sakura-mon Gate, taking in the enormous stones of the ramparts on the way out, and say goodbye at around 7:55 AM. If you'd like to climb the keep afterwards, you'll be first in line for the 9:00 AM opening — ahead of the queue.

Option 2: Dotonbori Early Morning Walk

Meet your guide and start at Namba Yasaka Shrine, whose gates open at 6:00 AM. Its vast lion-head hall is one of the strangest and most photogenic things in Osaka, and at this hour you'll most likely have it to yourselves.

From there, head to Hozenji Yokocho, slipping down a narrow stone-paved lane behind the neon district to reach the Mizukake Fudo statue. Decades of worshippers throwing water over it have left it so thickly covered in moss that the stone beneath is barely visible. You're welcome to ladle water over it and make a wish, just as locals have done for generations.

Then, head out onto Ebisubashi Bridge and the Dotonbori Canal. This is the most photographed spot in Osaka, and right now there is nobody standing in your frame. Your guide takes your photo in front of the Glico sign, and then walk on along the canal beneath those giant signboards, following the quiet Tombori River Walk.

Finish at the entrance to Kuromon Market. The market starts opening around 9:00 AM, which makes it the perfect place for breakfast once you've said goodbye.
