About the Tongariro Alpine Crossing

New Zealand’s most famous day hike through Tongariro National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Area.

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing typically takes 6–8 hours and includes steep climbs and exposed terrain. Being properly prepared is essential, and having reliable transport is a key part of a successful day.

From 1 May to late October the Tongariro Alpine Crossing is considered a difficult, expert-level hike. The track can be covered with snow and very icy in sections. Temperatures are frequently below freezing, and avalanches may occur.

Alpine skills and equipment, as well as warm and waterproof clothing, are essential to hike the track.
