10 Days Northern Ethiopia’s Cultural & Geological Wonders

Day 1: Arrival in Addis Ababa and Gondar

Arrive in Addis Ababa and connect to your domestic flight to Gondar. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel for rest and refreshment. In the afternoon, visit the Royal Enclosure of Fasil Ghebbi, Fasilides’ Bath, and Debre Berhan Selassie Church. In the evening, enjoy dinner at a local restaurant followed by a traditional music house visit to experience the “Eskista” shoulder dance.

Day 2: Gondar to Simien Mountains

After breakfast, drive to Debark, the headquarters of the Simien Mountains National Park. Complete park permits and meet your local guide, scout, and camp team. Continue to Michiby viewpoint, then begin a 2-hour trek to Sankaber Camp. Along the way, encounter herds of Gelada baboons, Klipspringer antelopes, and diverse birdlife. In the afternoon, trek to the Jinbar Waterfall. Enjoy a campfire dinner under the stars.

Day 3: Simien Mountains to Debark

Drive to Aynameda Camp, then trek 2 hours through Afro-alpine landscapes to Mount Enatye. Descend to Chennek Camp, where you have the best chance to see the rare Walia ibex. After lunch, return to Debark.

Day 4: Debark to Addis Ababa

Drive back to Gondar for your morning flight to Addis Ababa. In the afternoon, enjoy a city tour of Addis, including Merkato, the largest open-air market in Africa, and the National Museum, home of the famous fossil “Lucy.”

Day 5: Addis Ababa to Lalibela

Fly to Lalibela and transfer to your hotel. In the afternoon, visit the Northern Church Cluster, including the famous monolithic Bete Medhane Alem and the iconic Bete Giyorgis at sunset.

Day 6: Full-Day in Lalibela

Early morning visit to witness local church rituals before breakfast. Tour the Southern Church Cluster with its fascinating architecture and biblical symbolism. In the afternoon, drive or trek to Asheton Maryam Monastery, offering panoramic views over the highlands.
Day 7: Lalibela to Addis Ababa
Optional early visit to a Sunday church service in Lalibela. Fly back to Addis Ababa around midday. Continue sightseeing, covering sites not visited earlier, such as the Holy Trinity Cathedral or Ethnographic Museum.
Day 8: Addis Ababa to Danakil Depression
Fly to Semera and begin your Danakil expedition with 4x4 vehicles. Drive via Lake Afdera before continuing to Hamed Ela Camp. In the evening, visit Lake Asale for a dramatic sunset over the salt flats.

Day 9: Hamed Ela to Erta Ale

Witness sunrise at Lake Asale, followed by breakfast. Visit the surreal landscapes of Dallol, then continue driving across the desert toward Erta Ale volcano. In the late afternoon, trek to the rim of Erta Ale to witness glowing lava fields and fumaroles.

Day 10: Erta Ale to Addis Ababa
Optional early morning revisit to the volcano for sunrise. After breakfast, return drive via Lake Afdera for a swim in the salt lake. Arrive in Semera for your flight to Addis Ababa. In the evening, enjoy a farewell dinner at a traditional Ethiopian restaurant with a cultural dance performance.
