The city was dotted with prisons, a symbol of strict justice meant to maintain order, but which often concealed a dark side. Prisons were not only places of punishment, but reflected a reality where individual freedom was restricted, and abuse of power was not uncommon. Fear of control, punishment and constant surveillance hovered among people, while the city, while resplendent in its art and architecture, hid in the shadows a system of power that did not always respect justice and truth.
