Lapland: A Day at a Traditional Log Cabin & Snowshoe Trek

Experience a day in the life of a local in Lapland on a trip that includes a snowshoe trek, a sauna experience, and a barbecue. Explore the forest by snowshoes, look for animal tracks, and warm up in a sauna. Grill sausages and make pancakes in a kota, a local teepee.

We will leave by car from Ylläsjärvi and drive to a private wilderness cabin located in the forest, on the shore of Ylläs river. From there, explore the forest by snowshoes, far from the beaten tracks. Look for animal tracks such as moose, reindeer, hare, fox, and capercaillie, and if you are lucky, even spot one of those animals.

After the trek, start warming up the wood stove of the sauna and fetch water from the frozen river by making a hole through the ice. While the sauna is getting warm, grill sausages and make pancakes in the kota, the local teepee where you will eat and enjoy a warm drink.

After the snack, it’s time for a real sauna experience, finishing with diving in the snow in a swimming suit and making a snow angel – for the bravest only!
