Djerba: 3-Day Sahara Desert and Dahar Mountains Hike

Embark on a 3-day adventure from Djerba to the Dahar Mountains and the Sahara Desert. Hike through rocky landscapes, visit Berber villages, and trek with camels in the desert.
Day 1: Djerba → Dahar Mountains → Douz → Sahara Camp

Begin your adventure with a morning departure from Djerba. Cross the historic Roman causeway connecting Djerba to the mainland. Drive toward the Dahar mountain region and enjoy a guided hike (approx. 2 hours) with a local guide through rocky landscapes, traditional paths, and panoramic viewpoints. Return to the starting point.

Visit the traditional ksar (fortified granary) of Ksar Hallouf and enjoy lunch in a local setting. Drive through Douz, known as the Gateway to the Sahara, and continue toward Sabria.

Arrive at Dunes Insolites Desert Camp and settle in. Take a sunset walk on the dunes near the camp and enjoy folkloric and equestrian animation. Watch a demonstration of traditional bread baked in the sand. Savor a Saharan dinner and spend the evening around the campfire. Overnight in a desert tent at the camp.

Day 2: Oasis Hike → Desert Trek → Nomadic Bivouac

After breakfast at the camp, embark on a guided hike to nearby oases. Discover desert vegetation, water sources, and nomadic knowledge. Return to the camp for lunch.

Meet the nomadic guide and camel handlers. Depart on foot, accompanied by dromedaries carrying equipment and food. Enjoy a desert hike (approx. 2 hours) across sand dunes. Arrive at the bivouac site and set up tents together with the nomadic guide. Enjoy the sunset over the dunes.

Prepare dinner with the guide and savor a traditional desert meal. Spend the evening around the fire under a sky full of stars. Overnight under the stars or in a nomadic tent.

Day 3: Sahara → Matmata → Toujane → Djerba

Begin your day with breakfast in the desert. Return on foot with the guide and camels to the camp. Enjoy a shower and relaxation at the camp.

Drive toward Matmata and visit the troglodyte houses. Continue to Toujane in the Dahar Mountains and enjoy a hike (approx. 1 hour) in the mountain village, known for its stunning views and traditional architecture. Enjoy lunch in a local setting before returning to Djerba, marking the end of your adventure.
