Beschreibung
Embark on a guided trek from Kathmandu and explore the remote landscapes and cultural heritage of eastern Nepal. Trek through traditional villages, alpine meadows, and open ridges.
Begin your journey in Kathmandu and travel by road toward Diktel in Khotang District, the gateway to the Mundum Trail. From Diktel, enter eastern Nepal, passing traditional settlements, terraced farmland, forested hills & rural communities before reaching Chakhewa. This remote route offers a quieter alternative to Nepal’s established trekking destinations.
Continue toward Dhotre and Maiyung as the trail gains altitude. The scenery changes from cultivated hills & villages to forests of rhododendron, pine, and native Himalayan vegetation. In spring, blooming rhododendrons add color, while autumn often provides pleasant trekking conditions & clearer mountain views.
From Maiyung, trek toward Rawadhap along forest paths & scenic mountain ridges. Ridge walking is a defining feature of the Mundum Trek, providing wide views across eastern Nepal & distant Himalayan ranges. The peaceful surroundings & low number of trekkers allow you to experience rural Nepal, while encounters with villagers, farmers & herders provide insight into traditional mountain life.
Continue from Rawadhap toward Salpa Bhanjyang & sacred Salpa Pokhari. Salpa Pokhari is an important natural & cultural landmark along the Mundum Trail with significance in local Kirati traditions. The landscape becomes increasingly alpine, with open grasslands, mountain ridges & expansive views. From here, continue toward Silichung Peak, the highest point at approximately 4,153m.
The ascent to Silichung Peak is a major highlight. In clear weather, the summit area can provide panoramic views across eastern Nepal, including possible views of Everest, Makalu, and Kanchenjunga. The higher altitude brings colder temperatures and changing weather, so trekkers should prepare with suitable clothing, footwear, hydration & reasonable physical fitness.
The Mundum Trek also offers an opportunity to experience Kirati and Rai culture. Their traditions, customs, lifestyle, and relationship with the landscape form an important part of eastern Nepal’s identity. Mundum refers to the oral religious and cultural tradition of the Kirati people. Travelers may experience local hospitality, traditional food, village life, and community-based accommodation depending on facilities.
Accommodation is generally provided in local lodges, homestays, or basic camping facilities where necessary. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are generally provided during the trekking section. Facilities can be basic due to the remote nature of the route, making this trek suitable for travelers seeking an authentic Himalayan experience.
Trekking days generally involve around 5–7 hours of walking, with the Silichung section requiring additional effort. After the high-altitude section, descend through forests and traditional settlements toward Bhojpur before returning to Kathmandu. Key locations include Kathmandu, Diktel, Chakhewa, Dhotre, Maiyung, Rawadhap, Salpa Bhanjyang, Salpa Pokhari, Silichung Peak, Hyakule, Sanam, Hanspokhari, and Bhojpur.
