Beschreibung
Hotel pickup in Nikko or Chuzenji. Ride into the old Ashio Copper Mine, walk the Watarase Valley and relax by quiet Kusaki Lake.
We pick you up at your hotel in Nikko town or at Lake Chuzenji. This private tour of about 8 hours goes south through the mountains to Ashio, a small valley town that was once one of the biggest copper mines in Japan. It is a calm day of industrial history, river views and lake scenery, far from the busy shrine area.
Around 09:40 we reach the Ashio Copper Mine visitor site. A small trolley train takes you into the old tunnel, and you walk past life-size figures that show how miners worked from the Edo period to modern times. Allow about one hour here.
Late morning we drive to the Furukawa Ashio history area and the old smelter view, where your guide explains how the mine changed the town and the river. Then we follow the Watarase gorge. We stop at riverside viewpoints and at Tsudo Station of the Watarase Keikoku Railway, a pretty country line with old wooden station buildings.
Around midday you have lunch at a local restaurant or a roadside station (michi-no-eki) near Azuma. Halal food is not guaranteed in this area, but simple vegetarian choices are often available.
In the afternoon we continue to Kusaki Lake, a long dam lake surrounded by forest. You can walk by the water and visit the Tomihiro Art Museum on the shore if you wish. Around 15:30 we start the drive back over the mountains, arriving at your hotel at about 17:00.
Your plan is customizable: on the day you can change the order of the stops, skip the railway station, spend longer at the lake, or swap in a nearby stop such as Kodaki mine ruins, as long as we stay in the Ashio and Watarase area and within the tour time.
This is a private tour. Only your group. Your driver-guide speaks English, and also Hindi and Urdu.
If the Ashio Copper Mine site is closed on your date, your driver-guide takes you to a similar place nearby instead. The tour price does not change. If you prefer, we can instead visit other mining heritage spots in Ashio and spend more time along the Watarase gorge.
