Beschreibung

Explore the 13th - century Debre Libanos Monastery and cross the 16th - century Portuguese Bridge. Witness breathtaking Jemma Gorge views & meet endemic Gelada baboons in their natural highland home.
We’ll start our morning by heading north, cutting through the rolling Sululta Plains. It’s a beautiful drive keep an eye out the window for traditional Oromo homesteads and the vast, colorful patchwork of local farms that define the Ethiopian countryside. As the road climbs, you’ll feel the temperature drop just enough to remind you we’re entering the true highlands.

Our first real stop is the legendary Debre Libanos Monastery. This isn't just a stop for photos it’s the spiritual heartbeat of the region, dating back to the 13th century. While the cathedral’s stained glass is stunning, the real magic is in the quiet museum, where you can stand inches away from ancient gold stitched robes and crowns belonging to past emperors. If you’re feeling up for a bit of a walk, we can head up to the sacred cave. It’s a powerful spot where pilgrims still come to collect holy water dripping right from the cliffside.

From there, we hit the "Grand Canyon of Africa" the Jemma River Gorge. We’ll walk across the famous Portuguese Bridge, a 16th-century marvel built with a unique mix of stone and, believe it or not, ostrich eggshells. Standing there, looking out over a 1,000 meter drop while a waterfall crashes down the basalt cliffs, is a feeling you won’t soon forget.

But the real stars of the show are the neighbors: the Gelada baboons. We call them the "Bleeding Heart" baboons because of the bright red patches on their chests. They’re incredibly peaceful we can often get quite close while they’re busy munching on grass along the cliff’s edge. It’s a rare, wild encounter that feels like a private safari. We’ll wrap up the day with a proper Ethiopian lunch with a view that beats any five-star restaurant, before heading back down to the city.

WICHTIGE INFORMATIONEN
Respecting the Sanctuary - Debre Libanos is an active holy site. To enter the church, everyone must cover their shoulders and knees. Ladies, carrying a light scarf to wrap around your head or shoulders is a wonderful gesture of respect that the local community truly appreciates.

The Shoe Rule - Like all Ethiopian Orthodox churches, you’ll be asked to take off your shoes before stepping inside. I highly recommend wearing a pair of warm socks the ancient stone floors can get quite chilly, even on sunny days!

Altitude Awareness - We’ll be spending the day at over 2,500 meters (8,200 feet). The air is thinner up here, so we’ll take the walks at a relaxed pace. Remember to drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated.

Wildlife Etiquette - The Gelada baboons are generally very calm and used to people, but they are still wild animals. To keep ( them & you ) safe, please refrain from feeding them or using flash photography.
