Visit Tbilisi Sea, Shiomgvime monastery in the old town Mtskheta, continue to the Uplistsikhe caves and Stalin Museum and to the historical Didgori Memorial
The Tbilisi Sea is a large artificial reservoir on the northeastern edge of Tbilisi, built in the 1950s mainly to supply water to the city. Despite its name, it’s actually a lake-sized reservoir and one of the most popular summer recreation spots near the capital.
Shiomgvime Monastery is one of Georgia’s oldest and most atmospheric monastic complexes, hidden deep inside a limestone canyon near Mtskheta, about 40 km west of Tbilisi.
The monastery was founded in the 6th century by Saint Shio, one of the famous Thirteen Assyrian Fathers who helped spread monastic life in Georgia. The name “Shiomgvime” roughly means “Shio’s Cave.”
Mtskheta is one of the oldest and most sacred cities in Georgia, located at the meeting point of the Aragvi and Mtkvari rivers, about 20 km north of Tbilisi. It was the ancient capital of the Kingdom of Iberia and remains the spiritual center of the country.
The city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most important historical destinations in the Caucasus.
Uplistsikhe is one of Georgia’s oldest and most fascinating ancient settlements — a rock-hewn cave city carved directly into sandstone cliffs above the Mtkvari River, near Gori.
The name “Uplistsikhe” roughly means “The Fortress of the Lord.” The site dates back to the early Iron Age and became a major political, religious, and trading center for centuries.
Stalin Museum is a museum dedicated to Joseph Stalin, located in his birthplace city of Gori, about 80 km west of Tbilisi.
Opened in 1957 during the Soviet era, the museum is one of the most unusual historical museums in Georgia because much of it still preserves Soviet-style presentation and architecture. It attracts visitors interested in Soviet history, World War II, and 20th-century politics.
