Beschreibung

Explore the Deichtorhallen - Hall for Contemporary Art in Hamburg. Discover exhibitions that push the boundaries of creative expression and cultural thought.
Step into one of Europe’s most renowned centers for contemporary art — where history, architecture, and innovation converge.
Built between 1911 and 1914 on the site of Hamburg’s former market halls, the Deichtorhallen’s striking steel-and-glass design stands as a symbol of the city’s openness to trade, transformation, and creativity.

Today, these two monumental halls form a vibrant hub for international art and photography, known for exhibitions that challenge conventions and spark dialogue across cultures.
The Hall for Contemporary Art (Halle für aktuelle Kunst), the larger of the two spaces, is a masterpiece of early industrial architecture — its cathedral-like interior and glass roof create an atmosphere of light and openness, ideal for monumental installations and thought-provoking displays.

Since opening in 1989, the Deichtorhallen have showcased pioneering artists including Jeff Koons, Cindy Sherman, Gilbert & George, Ai Weiwei, and Marina Abramović, making it a cornerstone of Hamburg’s cultural landscape and one of Europe’s leading venues for the global avant-garde.
Every new exhibition transforms the hall anew, inviting visitors to see both art and the city from a fresh perspective — where industrial past meets artistic future.

Huguette Caland: A Life in a Few Lines
24 October 2025 – 26 April 2026
Experience the bold and sensual world of Huguette Caland (1931–2019), one of the most independent voices of 20th-century modernism.
This first comprehensive European retrospective unites more than 300 works — from paintings and drawings to textiles and sculpture — tracing Caland’s journey from Beirut to Paris and Venice.
Her art celebrates intimacy, humor, and freedom while challenging the conventions of beauty and femininity.
Curated by Hannah Feldman in collaboration with the Museo Reina Sofía Madrid.

Into the Unseen: The Walther Collection
24 October 2025 – 26 April 2026
Explore photography beyond the visible in this groundbreaking exhibition featuring rare works from The Walther Collection — one of the world’s most significant private photography collections.
Before joining the permanent holdings of The Met in New York, this presentation brings together artists such as Santu Mofokeng, Rotimi Fani-Kayode, Yang Fudong, and Cang Xin, who expand the boundaries of visual perception.
Curated by Nadine Isabelle Henrich and Tina M. Campt, the show transforms viewing into a multi-sensory experience of sound, scent, and texture.

A visit to the Hall for Contemporary Art is more than a museum stop — it’s an immersion into Hamburg’s creative pulse, where art, architecture, and ideas flow together in continuous dialogue.
